I met up with Tim a few weeks ago and probed him on his views on integrated marketing, data collection and market research. Tim is one of the few CMO’s with very hands on practical knowledge and can talk to you about brand development as well as regression analysis to determine how to hire sales staff.
He had a very interesting story on how he use regression analysis to determine what attributes are needed for sales staff – he knew who his top performers were and he used a quick survey to determine the factors!

Peter Levin is one of the most down-to-earth CTO’s of a federal agency I’ve ever met – Strike that – he is one of the most straight talking CTO’s I’ve _ever_ met. It’s quite amazing that he is the CTO of a 310,000 (yes – 310K) person organization – the Veterans Administration.
Recently, Peter gave a talk on “Get to Yes” – on Gov 2.0 – To talk about his experience on making Government work and work better. Key points he mentioned:
- The notion of “Getting To Yes” – Only Secy Shinseki can say “No” – Find a way to get to “Yes”
- Transforming from Adversary to Advocacy
- I need to get 300K employees to engage – find a channel – Be present, accessible on the web
- IdeaScale worked well – but there are lots of other tools also out there
- 50K employees participating in this experiment
- 6 Million Unique patients the VA serves

The two day conference put together by CASRO wrapped up last week and the last talk of the conference was given by Research Access contributor and Managing Director of NEBU – Andrew Jeavons.
Couple of quick tidbits about the conference itself:
- Art Flannagan says that was the highest attended conference even for CASRO – Tech
- The Usual suspects from Panel sales (Toluna, SSI, uSamp were exhibiting) -
However eRewards was absent. (See UPDATE below)
- From the Software side, Confirmit and SPSS were there – IBM plans to continuing support for SPSS for MR?
- No one new was there!
Now, a little bit about what Andrew talked about:
- Market Research cannot be only about Web/Telephone Surveys and Cross-Tabs.
- Social Media and Mobile is the next hot thing for Market Research
- Neuromarketing – Inferring without asking – they are the “barbarians at the gate” – this thing can open the floodgates for alternative models for gathering insight.
He explains all these concepts in detail – in his 1 hr presentation. Unfortunately, due to some alcoholic difficulties, we were only able to capture 30 mins of his presentation: Video embedded below:
UPDATE:
I got this email from Art Flannagan:
Vivek,
We do not allow unauthorized recordings of conference sessions.
Also, there are inaccuracies in your account of the conference.
“However eRewards was absent.”
- e-Rewards had an exhibit table and 5 attendees.
“No one new was there!”
- Really? We had several first-time attendees as would be expected with the record attendance.
Please remove the video from your site.
-Art
Our response:
- We updated the reference to eRewards not exhibiting.
- No one new was there – that’s our opinion and we are sticking to it.
- Finally – with respect to the video – I am in consultation with my lawyers regarding this. Once we have a legal position on this, we will update this post. As of now, the video remains there.

Dan Munz, who is part of the General Services Administration (GSA) – New Media and Citizen Engagement group recently gave a talk at Gov 2.0 Expo. He talked in length about the center’s mission and also gave very practical advice on how other agencies, state and local governments can engage and learn from citizens.

Are customers getting fed up with repeated requests to take surveys post transaction?
Well, Bill Maher certainly thinks so. I must say, I am a big fan of Bill and he has some very edgy commentary and weaving social issues into humour – not to mention that he is a big proponent of legalizing weed. I was surprised and excited when he took a shot at Apple (and in general all retailers that send post transaction surveys) and basically called it incessant.
Are post transaction surveys going to go down the route of popup surveys and popup ads? Remember – popup blockers were invented to stop people from overindulging. The fact is, we has humans will always indulge till we get slapped. Maybe Bill is doing us a favor and slapping us before customers become really annoyed?
Here is the video clip below – pretty funny actually:

Research TV : Max-Diff Scaling
Dr. Nico Peruzzi (@NicoPeruzziPhD) from Outsource Research Consulting has put together a very informative video on Max-Diff Scaling. Max-Diff Scaling is a simple (yet relatively powerful) technique for users to determine what is “truly” important, and for that matter what is NOT important for a user.
For too long, we’ve relied on 5Pt likert Scales – and this has to change. 5Pt Likert scales do not provide data that is actionable – Just ask NetFlix – they spend a million dollars and the fundamental problem is that 5pt rating scales do not “discriminate” enough.
Learn more about Max-Diff Scaling by watching this video from Nico.
